WASHINGTON, D.C. ? Just because the federal government is shut down doesn't mean those who have made an impact in their communities won't be honored during the yearly Angels in Adoption ceremony in Washington, D.C.
One of this year's recipients is Hillsdale resident Heather Tritchka-Stuchell, who is being recognized for her commitment to helping children in the Hillsdale area.

WASHINGTON ? A day after the federal government officially shutdown many services and limited others, U.S. Rep Tim Walberg, R-Tipton, went on the offensive Wednesday saying the shutdowns were caused by Democratic leaders in the Senate and the President.

BLACKMAN TWP., MI – Congressman Tim Walberg's excitement for what small business can do was renewed when he visited SeaLandAire Technologies, a Blackman Township company that designs and creates innovative sensor and surveillance systems.

"In here, you have a very creative environment," Walberg said about SeaLandAire, 1510 Springport Road. "The amazing things they are doing in Jackson, Michigan … it's not in Silicon Valley."

The Obama administration's newly installed regulatory chief has turned down an invitation to testify before a House panel about the decision to postpone a crucial component of the Affordable Care Act, a pair of incensed GOP lawmakers said Wednesday.

Overly-generous disability benefits create a disincentive for some federal workers injured on the job to return to work or ever retire, a top Department of Labor official told a House subcommittee Wednesday.

Federal employees can receive more money on disability than their counterparts who keep working under the current system, said Gary Steinberg, acting director of DOL's Office of Workers' Compensation Programs.

They also make more by staying on disability once they reach retirement age than they would by going onto a federal pension plan.

Not wanting to employ a criminal makes you a racist. At least that is what the Obama administration has determined to be law with a regulation made without congressional approval. Businesses are fighting the charge that not wanting ex-cons on the payroll is illegal discrimination.

JACKSON, MI – U.S. Rep. Tim Walberg, R-Tipton, is hosting an open house for Jackson County high school students and recent graduates interested in applying to a military service academy.

The event runs from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, June 21 at the Commonwealth Commerce Center, 209 E. Washington Ave.

Representatives from the U.S. Military, Naval , Air Force, Coast Guard and Merchant Marine academies will be available to answer questions.

Rep. Tim Walberg, R-Mich., said at a House Education and the Workforce Committee hearing this morning that the Labor Department expanded the reach of Davis-Bacon Act without public comment earlier this year.

Davis-Bacon is a law that requires contractors engaged in any federally-funded construction project to affirm that they are paying workers the prevailing local wage. Big Business dislikes the law, calling it a time-consuming and often subjective process. The law is strongly-favored by Big Labor though since it serves to remove any economic incentive to hire non-union labor.

The Helping Families Save for Education Act, introduced by Representatives Tim Walberg (R–MI) and Dan Kildee (D–MI) would expand the usefulness of Coverdell Education Savings Accounts (ESAs).
