JACKSON, MI – U.S. Rep. Tim Walberg, R-Tipton, is hosting an open house for Jackson County high school students and recent graduates interested in applying to a military service academy.

The event runs from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, June 21 at the Commonwealth Commerce Center, 209 E. Washington Ave.

Representatives from the U.S. Military, Naval , Air Force, Coast Guard and Merchant Marine academies will be available to answer questions.

Rep. Tim Walberg, R-Mich., said at a House Education and the Workforce Committee hearing this morning that the Labor Department expanded the reach of Davis-Bacon Act without public comment earlier this year.

Davis-Bacon is a law that requires contractors engaged in any federally-funded construction project to affirm that they are paying workers the prevailing local wage. Big Business dislikes the law, calling it a time-consuming and often subjective process. The law is strongly-favored by Big Labor though since it serves to remove any economic incentive to hire non-union labor.

A bill introduced in the House of Representatives could have widespread benefits to parents saving for a child's education.

The Helping Families Save for Education Act, introduced by Representatives Tim Walberg (R–MI) and Dan Kildee (D–MI) would expand the usefulness of Coverdell Education Savings Accounts (ESAs).

JACKSON, MI – Nichelle Austin was surprised to see so many companies offering job opportunities at U.S. Rep. Tim Walberg's job fair in Jackson Wednesday, May 29.

The Jackson resident recently graduated from Eastern Michigan University with a degree in communications in marketing and has looked at employers such as Allegiance Health and Meijer.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Republicans in the House of Representatives urged the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission to focus on routine cases and set aside more aggressive initiatives.

The admonition came on Wednesday as EEOC Chair Jacqueline Berrien testified before a subcommittee of the House Committee on Education and the Workforce about the agency's enforcement strategy.

WASHINGTON — Two Michigan congressmen are proposing legislation that woulld allow families to save even more for their children's college costs.

The bill proposed by U.S. Reps. Tim Walberg, R-Tipton, and Dan Kildee, D-Flint Township, would increase from $2,000 to $10,000 a year the amount families can invest in Coverdell Savings Accounts for higher education.

The legislation would also increase the age of eligibility to withdraw amounts from the accounts from 18 to 22.

Educators and industry officials testified about the challenges of training workers for today's jobs during a rare congressional committee field hearing held Tuesday at Monroe County Community College.

U.S. Rep. Virginia Foxx, R-N.C., chairwoman of the Subcommittee on Higher Education and Workforce Training, was joined by U. S. Rep. Tim Walberg, R-Tipton, a subcommittee member, for the session that spanned more than two hours and dozens of work force topics.

Bedford Lions Club members last week celebrated a relationship and an anniversary with an establishment here they have come to know well.

They gathered at the Erie Restaurant, their usual meeting spot twice a month, and had southern fried chicken, the same meal they enjoyed the first time they met there 31 years earlier.
