Around 50 veterans from Hillsdale and Branch Counties were honored in the ceremony Thursday night with several family members in attendance.
"A lot of us were treated pretty badly," the 68-year-old Army veteran recalled Monday. "They called us baby killers. We were given the choice of wearing civilian clothes instead of our uniforms."
Jo Linda Cutler was selected from six nominees for the annual honor, announced Wednesday at the Lenawee County Fair's veterans recognition ceremonies. Other contenders were Bob Knoblauch, Dave Laforest, Allen Kern, Tom Neill and Mike Posten.
Cutler, a 1979 Adrian High School graduate, served in the U.S. Army from 1979-96. She is the first woman from Lenawee County to hold the highest position in the state DAV.
Michigan's 7th District Congressman Tim Walberg, a member of the Bipartisan Task Force to Combat the Heroin Epidemic, released the following statement in response to President Obama signing the Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act (CARA) into law on Friday.
House Speaker Paul Ryan made the appointment.
Rep. Walberg, R-Tipton, said the law would fund the military, "give our troops a well-deserved pay raise and secure the homeland."
Maintaining a strong national defense is vital to keeping Americans safe from mounting security threats, Rep. Walberg said.
U.S. Rep. Tim Walberg of Michigan's 7th congressional district called each veteran by name, presented them with a pin, and thanked them for their service, valor, and sacrifice.
Walberg feels that Vietnam veterans are due the warm welcome they never received when the war ended in in 1975.
Any veteran who served in active duty at any time from Nov. 1, 1955 to May 15, 1975, regardless of location, is invited to join the ceremony at the Saline American Legion located at 320 West Michigan Avenue in Saline. The event will begin at 5 pm.
The ceremony for Branch and Hillsdale Counties will take place on August 10 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at Hillsdale American Legion,1611 Steamburg Rd in Hillsdale.

A local veteran is walking 60 days and 1,000 miles to bring attention to servicemen suffering from PTSD.
Marty Wills began his journey in the Spring Lake Memorial Day parade and plans to travel to Camp Lajuene, North Carolina. He is currently 350 miles away from his goal in Maryland, walking alone with just a 50-pound pack and American Flag.
Wills entered military service in 1989 and retired in 2013, serving in the Navy as a Corpsman and in the Army as a combat medic. He does not suffer from PTSD, however he keeps in touch with veterans who do.
