Since vocational education training has been just about eliminated in all but two Monroe County high schools, students who want to learn about the trades will have an option this fall.
The 2-year-old, state-of-the-art Career Technology Center on the Monroe County Community College campus will be open for high school students. Business leaders and educators said training students for jobs waiting to be filled — even at the high school level — is vital.

WILLIS — Two legislators hope to rally support to protect the Great Lakes and other waterways.
On Tuesday, U. S. Reps. Tim Walberg, R- Tipton, and Candice Miller, R-Harrison Township, announced the Great Lakes Assurance Program Verification Act at Darling Farms.
The legislation, created by Rep. Miller, builds off the Michigan Agriculture Environmental Assurance Program (MAEAP). It encourages states throughout the Great Lakes Basin to develop voluntary agricultural assurance programs to promote conservation and minimize agricultural pollution risks.

A veterans fair in Washtenaw County today offered one-stop shopping for employment, counseling, health, and other services. About 20 groups participated in the event at Scio Township Hall. Michigan U.S. Reps. Tim Walberg and Debbie Dingell hosted the event.
Organizations on hand to offer help included the VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System, the VFW Department of Michigan Service Office, the Washtenaw County Department of Veterans Affairs, Buddy-to-Buddy Volunteer Veteran Program, Michigan Operation Freedom Outdoors, and many more.

The controversial police tactic of seizing cash and other property without a warrant or indictment is generating a backlash in Michigan.
The state House and at least two members of Michigan's congressional delegation are trying to put restrictions on state and federal law enforcement's seizure of property that officers suspect of being involved in criminal activity — even when charges aren't eventually filed.

Lawmakers on Thursday peddled their ideas to the House Judiciary Committee on how to reform the criminal justice system, which spanned from preventing police departments from investigating their own officers to limiting the amount of property that cops are able to seize and sell for a profit.
More than a dozen Congress members showed up to a midmorning committee congressional listening session to pitch their reform proposals in the wake of the committee's announcement that it planned to overhaul the nation's system.

A Republican congressman from Michigan is sponsoring a bill he says would protect pregnant women from potential discrimination by employers.
U.S. Rep. Tim Walberg, R-Tipton, and Sen. Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, introduced the legislation Wednesday in response to a recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling that pregnant workers may sue over a denial of accommodations afforded to workers with disabilities.

WASHINGTON, D.C. - 60 post World War II veterans traveled to Washington Tuesday to see the memorial made for their service. It's called an Honor Flight. This free trip to Washington, D.C. is entering its 10th year in Michigan.
Jerome Walters was able to visit the memorial with his granddaughter, Emily, who is currently serving. She says she has been inspired by her grandfather's service and believes we all have a duty to our country.

They gather in memory of a young man who died serving his community.
"He always wanted to be a policeman, ever since he was very little," said Marc Bonneau, the officer's dad.
Officer James Bonneau worked at Jackson Police Department for around two years.
"He had a great smile," said Chief Matthew Heins. "He always wanted to do a great job, and he put his best foot forward."
"It's a very great honor for us," said Marc Bonneau. "It's nice that the community is going to remember him this way."
