Bedford Lions Club members last week celebrated a relationship and an anniversary with an establishment here they have come to know well.

They gathered at the Erie Restaurant, their usual meeting spot twice a month, and had southern fried chicken, the same meal they enjoyed the first time they met there 31 years earlier.

But the lawmaker says he's confident that in the weeks ahead progress will be made on framing a budget that includes a House proposal for surgical cuts that minimize the impact of sequester — massive automatic cuts in government spending across the board.

As a member of the U.S. House Education and the Workforce Committee, Rep. Tim Walberg spends a nice chunk of his time discussing educational issues in congress.

On Tuesday, Walberg spent time with educational leaders in Hillsdale County to talk about the issues facing county educators.

Walberg met with Hillsdale Intermediate School District Superintendent Mike Potts, HISD General Education Director Pat Dillon and Pittsford Superintendent Andy Shaw for more than an hour Tuesday at the Parke D. Hayes building.

Fifty years after the U.S. Supreme Court banned school-sponsored prayer, the subject still stirs strong emotions on both sides.

The ban, however, fits into a larger debate about prayer in the public square.

Two-term Michigan Rep. Tim Walberg believes prayer is a part of America's DNA, pointing to the founding fathers who sought divine guidance as he himself does.

Congress is rejecting the Pentagon's plans to cut planes and personnel from the Air National Guard and to review all military bases for potential closure next year.

That should block for now changes that could have cost hundreds of jobs from the Michigan Air National Guard, including about 70 in Battle Creek.

JACKSON, MI -- U.S. Rep. Tim Walberg has introduced legislation to lower taxes that he says would bring more certainty for individuals and small business owners.

The legislation, House Resolution 6225, would make tax cuts permanent, eliminate the estate tax that's better known as the "death tax," index the capital gains tax for inflation and include an alternative minimum tax patch for 2012, according to a news release from Walberg.

JACKSON, MI - Rep. Tim Walberg voted for a House Republican measure that would extend for one year tax cuts approved under the administration of President George W. Bush.

The legislation is opposed by most Democrats in the House and Senate, who are proposing to extend the cuts for most taxpayers, but not the wealthiest Americans.

The tax cut extension passed the House Wednesday by a vote of 256 to 171, largely along party lines.

A Purple Heart was presented Wednesday to the family of the man for whom the Durkee-Seager Post 550 American Legion of Onsted in part is named.

Michigan National Guard Col. Jim Bartolacci, along with U.S. Rep. Tim Walberg and state Sen. Bruce Caswell, presented the award for Pfc. Frank Durkee of Co. B, 3rd Infantry Division of the U.S. Army, who died in 1918 while serving during World War I. The military award was presented to Durkee’s great-nephews, Richard and Scott Durkee of Tecumseh, on behalf of their father, Royce, who died Tuesday.
