South Michigan News: Walberg reaffirms support for parental rights on National Parents’ Day

Congressman Tim Walberg of Michigan’s 5th District released a statement on July 24 recognizing National Parents’ Day and reiterating his commitment to supporting the involvement of parents in their children’s education.

"On National Parents' Day, we celebrate the parents who nurture curiosity at home, advocate for their children at school, and work tirelessly to ensure every child has the opportunity to reach their full potential," said Walberg. "Supporting parental rights means ensuring every family stays informed, engaged, and empowered in their child’s learning journey. Educational success is greatest when parents’ voices are welcomed and respected, and I remain committed to ensuring that parents are involved in the key choices affecting their children at school."

Walberg highlighted recent legislative efforts such as the Stopping Indoctrination and Protecting Kids Act, which passed the House in May. The bill aims to increase transparency in K-12 schools, strengthen parental rights, and prevent federal education funds from being used to promote what it describes as radical political or ideological agendas. Key provisions include requirements for schools to keep parents informed about important decisions affecting students; prohibitions on using federal funds for promoting gender ideology or compelling ideological beliefs; mandates for clear communication with families; consequences for withholding critical information; and measures intended to place decision-making power back with parents rather than bureaucrats.

Walberg currently serves as Chairman of the Education and Workforce Committee. He has represented Michigan’s 5th District since 2011 after previously serving in the Michigan House of Representatives from 1983 to 1999, according to Walberg's official website. Walberg was born in Chicago in 1951, lives in Tipton, Michigan, and graduated from Taylor University with a Bachelor of Arts degree.
