Walberg Upholds Commitment to Supporting Parental Rights

As communities across the nation celebrate National Parents’ Day on Sunday, Congressman Tim Walberg (MI-05) released the following statement recognizing the role parents play as their children's first educators and reaffirming their right to be involved in decisions impacting their children. 

"On National Parents' Day, we celebrate the parents who nurture curiosity at home, advocate for their children at school, and work tirelessly to ensure every child has the opportunity to reach their full potential," said Rep. Walberg. "Supporting parental rights means ensuring every family stays informed, engaged, and empowered in their child’s learning journey. Educational success is greatest when parents’ voices are welcomed and respected, and I remain committed to ensuring that parents are involved in the key choices affecting their children at school."

Background

In May, the House passed the Stopping Indoctrination and Protecting Kids Act, legislation led by Education and Workforce Committee Chairman Tim Walberg (R-MI) and Rep. Burgess Owens (R-UT) to increase transparency in K-12 schools, strengthen parents’ rights, and ensure federal education dollars are not used to advance radical political or ideological agendas in the classroom.

The bill: 

• Ensures schools keep parents informed and involved in key decisions affecting their children.
• Prohibits federal funds from being used to promote radical gender ideology or compel ideological beliefs—codifying President Trump’s executive actions and affirming that there are two sexes.
• Requires clear communication with families and establishes consequences for withholding critical information.
• Puts parents—not bureaucrats—back in charge of their children’s education.
