The government has now been shut down for over a week, harming hardworking Michiganders. The Senate has now voted to keep the government shut down 7 times, despite bipartisan support for the clean, government funding bill passed by the House. For each week that the shutdown drags on, Michigan loses out on $361 million in economic activity. I've heard from many constituents who are concerned about a prolonged shutdown and its impact for them and their families. To learn more about what the shutdown means for you, please visit my website here.
I joined other members of the Michigan Republican Delegation in sending a letter to Michigan's Senators, urging them to vote in favor of H.R. 5371, the clean continuing resolution, that would reopen the federal government and provide funding through November 21. Democrats in the Senate must end this shutdown to ensure that Americans have certainty and access to critical services.
As a result of the shutdown, our troops, border patrol agents, air traffic controllers, and more will go without pay. Members of Congress shouldn’t be paid while they go without. I have requested that my pay be withheld until the government is funded.
President Trump announced on Wednesday that Israel and Hamas have agreed to the first phase of a peace plan to release all hostages. This is a historic step towards achieving a lasting peace in the Middle East.
This week marked 2 years since Hamas' despicable terrorist attack, where some 1,200 people were killed, including over 40 Americans. That brutal terrorist attack unleashed a wave of antisemitism across our education system that has made Jewish students and faculty feel profoundly unsafe. As Chairman of the Education and Workforce Committee, I am fighting to protect Jewish students across the country—and hold K-12 and higher education leaders accountable when they fail to do so.
As the Democrats drag out their shutdown, my office continues to stay open to provide the latest information. I’ve heard from servicemembers and their families worried about not receiving their next paycheck, small businesses concerned about loans, and seniors and veterans worried about receiving assistance and services from federal agencies. For the latest information on what services are impacted, please visit my website here.
I had the opportunity to visit farmers to hear more about how the Democrats’ government shutdown interrupts critical payments and loans from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) for our nation’s farmers. The shutdown is also preventing farmers from being able to access vital technical assistance and services through the Farm Service Agency and Natural Resources Conservation Service. Our farmers work tirelessly each day to feed our communities, and Democrats in the Senate must reopen the government to provide them with the stability and security they need.
As a member of Congress, one of my highest honors is nominating a limited number of exceptional students from Michigan’s 5th District to the U.S. Service Academies. If you know a student interested in applying to a service academy, the deadline to apply for my nomination is October 15.
