Sue and I are so thankful that President Trump is safe after yet another assassination attempt. There is no doubt President Trump deserves the same level of protection that President Biden receives. On Friday, the House unanimously passed a bill to bolster President Trump's security detail. In addition to the security itself, many need to reconsider the divisive and untrue rhetoric that's been used to distract from the policy records on the campaign trail. The American people deserve answers, and they deserve a campaign centered on records and policy positions.
In March, the EPA finalized stringent emissions standards, which would force automakers to ensure that 56% of light-duty vehicle sales are battery electric and another 13% are plug-in hybrid by 2032. On Friday, I helped the House pass legislation to block this de facto electric vehicle (EV) mandate. Last December, the House passed my legislation, the CARS Act, which would prevent future regulations from being made that would limit the availability of vehicles based on engine type. The future of the auto industry should be forged through innovation in Michigan, not by edicts from bureaucrats in Washington.
Strengthening Privacy Rights of Kids and Teens
Last Wednesday, the Energy and Commerce Committee held a markup on my bill, the Children and Teens’ Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA 2.0). This bipartisan, bicameral legislation would build on the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA), the only online privacy law for children, to protect kids and teens from the privacy and safety risks they face online. By prohibiting internet companies from collecting the personal information of kids and teenagers without their consent, banning targeted advertising, and establishing data minimization rules, we can provide our nation’s youth and their parents with the protections necessary to navigate the digital age.
Over the past few years, there have been an increasing number of incidents on college campuses where the free speech and free association of students have been restricted due to religious beliefs. The House passed my bill, the Equal Campus Access Act, as a provision in the End Woke Higher Education Act. The Equal Campus Access Act would clarify that no funds shall be made available to a public institution that denies a religious student group any right similarly afforded to other student organizations because of the religious group’s beliefs, practices, or leadership standards. You may read more about my work to defend the First Amendment liberties of college students in my recent op-ed in The Washington Times.
Last week, the Committee on Homeland Security released a report that exposes the many ways that the Biden-Harris administration has knowingly undermined our national security by creating the border crisis. The administration’s failure to secure our border has negatively impacted communities across America, turning every community into a border community. Recently, I helped the House pass the Violence Against Women by Illegal Aliens Act to protect our communities. The legislation would make illegal immigrants who are convicted of or who admit to having committed sex offenses or domestic violence deportable from the United States. Please know I will continue to work to secure our border and keep our communities safe.
