Today, the Labor Department reported that the nation's unemployment rate rose to 9.2 percent in June. Employers added only 18,000 new jobs, and April and May jobs numbers were revised to show 44,000 fewer jobs were created than previously reported. Today Congressman Tim Walberg joined with several House colleagues in a press conference to demand a response to a June 2nd letter sent by 33 House members to HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius. The letter asked for information on waivers to President Obama’s health care law, including details on the number and types of waivers denied and pending, as well response time to waiver requests.

Today, the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) released a report on America’s long-term economic outlook. Among its findings, the report states the federal government’s record budget deficits are the largest (as a share of the economy) since 1945.

Today, Congressman Tim Walberg released the following statement on the one year anniversary of President Obama’s “Recovery Summer.”

“In 2009, the Obama administration promised that if the Democrats borrowed a trillion dollars to ‘stimulate’ the economy, the unemployment rate would not exceed 8 percent. Today, we sit at 9.1%, and it’s even worse in some parts of the 7th District,” said Congressman Walberg.

One year ago today, the Obama administration launched its “Recovery Summer” publicity tour to bolster flagging support for the “stimulus.”

Today, Congressman Tim Walberg voted in favor of a bill to repeal two burdensome regulations on colleges and universities. H.R. 2117, the Protecting Academic Freedom in Higher Education Act, was overwhelmingly passed by the House Committee on Education and the Workforce.

"I am deeply troubled by the news of the Gainful Employment rule. We don’t need additional red tape that hurts the ability of millions of people to attend college and learn new skills in the next decade. Despite making my opposition known in a letter to the President and through amendment, the Administration has chosen to ignore Congress and move forward with this regulation. Unfortunately this time it will be to the detriment of many low-income students who need it the most."

Today, Congressman Tim Walberg (MI-7) participated in a congressional hearing which focused on the regulatory barriers to spurring job growth and expanding the economy. The hearing was conducted by the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee and was entitled, “Regulatory Impediments to Job Creation.” The witnesses included small business owners, manufacturers, and regulatory scholars.

Today, Congressman Tim Walberg (MI-7) introduced a critical piece of legislation that would prevent the implementation of a costly new federal mandate on homeowners. The bill, HR 700, is entitled the Floodplain Maps Moratorium Act, and it is being introduced in response to local concerns about the burdensome mandate voiced by many constituents in the Seventh District.
