U.S. Rep. Tim Walberg was among House Republicans who voted Friday in favor of a balanced budget amendment to the Constitution that did not gain enough support to pass.

The amendment, which was touted by Republicans during debt ceiling talks, needed a two-thirds majority to pass. However, House Republicans could not convince enough Democratic colleagues to back the measure and it fell in a 261-165 vote.

A balanced budget amendment would have prevented the federal government from spending more than the revenue it receives.

“Burying the next generation in debt is morally wrong, which is why I voted for the balanced budget amendment and consistently vote to cut government spending,” Walberg, R-Tipton, said in a written statement Friday. “I’m disappointed in the way the vote went, but will continue working to place America on a sound financial footing so our economy can grow and create jobs over the long-term.”

The Jackson County Board of Commissioners on Tuesday also tabled a resolution to ask federal lawmakers to support a balanced budget amendment.
