Washington, D.C. – Congressman Tim Walberg (MI-07), a member of the Bipartisan Task Force to Combat the Heroin Epidemic, added his support to another piece of bipartisan legislation to combat the growing heroin and prescription opioid epidemic. The Stop Trafficking in Fentanyl Act, introduced by Reps. Tom Rooney (R-FL) and Tim Ryan (D-OH), would toughen trafficking penalties for fentanyl, a dangerous synthetic drug 50 times more potent than heroin that has become increasingly prevalent in drug overdose deaths.

Two Michigan lawmakers are inquiring whether the VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System has solved its problem of particulate matter on sterile surgical equipment after reports that surgeries have resumed at the hospital.

Reps. Debbie Dingell, D-Dearborn, and Tim Walberg, R-Tipton, wrote Friday to Ann Arbor Director Robert P. McDivitt explaining that they'd received calls about surgeries taking place, despite the continued presence of particulate matter on equipment.

Washington, D.C. – Following reports that surgeries have resumed at the VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System, Representatives Debbie Dingell (MI-12) and Tim Walberg (MI-07) are seeking assurances that the surgeries are not being conducted in unsafe conditions. In November, Dingell wrote to Director Robert P. McDivitt following reports that surgeries for veterans had been canceled or moved to another facility because particulate matter was observed on sterile surgical equipment.

Lawmakers are working to tighten up the rules for travel to the U.S. in the wake of the Paris and San Bernardino attacks.

The House voted through legislation Tuesday that would overhaul the federal visa waiver program.

The bill passed overwhelmingly, with a vote of 407 to 19.

It would institute a series of changes, specifically directed at people traveling from countries that are deemed "terror hotspots."

The current visa waiver program allows citizens of 38 countries to travel to the US for 90 days or less without getting a visa.

Washington, D.C. – Congressman Tim Walberg (MI-07) voted today for the Visa Waiver Program Improvement and Terrorist Travel Prevention Act, bipartisan legislation to help prevent foreign terrorists from entering the United States. The bill, which passed by an overwhelming 407-19 margin, addresses security shortcomings within the Visa Waiver Program, increases intelligence sharing between participating countries, and prohibits individuals who have traveled to terrorist hotspots in the last five years from using this expedited travel program.

Washington, D.C. – Congressman Tim Walberg (MI-07) voted today for the Fixing America's Surface Transportation (FAST) Act, a bipartisan agreement between the House and Senate to reauthorize and reform America's highway and public transportation systems. The FAST Act, which passed the House by a 359-65 margin, is a five-year plan that does not raise taxes on hardworking families.

In going about our regular routines, we depend daily on our roads, bridges and public transportation to get us where we need to go. Our local businesses also depend on them to grow, create good-paying jobs and remain competitive.

While the deteriorating shape of our roads and bridges has been a hotly debated issue in Lansing, the federal government also must do its part to ensure states like Michigan can continue forward with funding and reforms for important projects.

Michigan is home to an estimated 680,000 veterans. In exchange for their selfless service to our country, we have an obligation to provide world-class care when they return home from the battlefield.

Sadly, far too many of our veterans are falling through the cracks as they start the next chapter of their lives. In fact, many who qualify for benefits don't know they're eligible or aren't taking advantage of them.
