Walberg Votes to Protect America's Strategic Petroleum Reserve from China

January 12, 2023

Washington, D.C. -- Today, Congressman Tim Walberg (MI-05) voted in support of H.R. 22, the Protecting America’s Strategic Petroleum Reserve from China Act, which passed the House by a vote of 331-97. This bipartisan bill, which Rep. Walberg was an original cosponsor, prevents the Secretary of Energy from selling oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) to any entity associated with the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).

“Gas prices have surged to historic highs these past two years due to the failed energy policies of President Biden. The President has used America’s Strategic Petroleum Reserve as a political band aid, draining it to the lowest level in nearly four decades in a shortsighted attempt to mitigate the full impact of his policies,” said Walberg. “The Biden administration’s reckless decision to sell over one million barrels of oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve to a CCP-affiliated company poses a threat to both America’s energy security and national security as a whole. Instead of using our strategic reserves for political gain, the Biden administration must stop its war on American energy. I am a proud cosponsor of this legislation, and I will continue to work with my colleagues to unleash domestic energy production and bring down energy prices for hardworking Americans.”
