Walberg Seeks Justice for Victims of Iranian Terrorism
October 1, 2015
Washington, D.C. – Congressman Tim Walberg (MI-07) voted today for the Justice for Victims of Iranian Terrorism Act, which prohibits President Obama from providing sanctions relief to Iran until he has certified to Congress that Iran has paid court-ordered damages it owes to victims of its terrorism. According to the Congressional Research Service, Iran has accumulated a debt of $43.5 billion in unpaid damages for attacks carried out by its terrorist proxies, including the 1983 bombing of the U.S. Marine Barracks in Beirut and 1996 bombing of the Khobar Towers in Saudi Arabia.
"Under President Obama's dangerous nuclear deal, Iran is rewarded with billions while American families who have lost a loved one at the hand of Iranian terrorism get nothing. Giving money to a state-sponsor of terror like Iran before victims is the type of backwards thinking that has come to define this Administration's foreign policy. Before we even consider lifting sanctions on Iran, justice must be served and this terrorist-sponsoring regime must be held accountable for taking the lives of innocent Americans," said Walberg.
Congressman Walberg serves on the House Education and the Workforce Committee as Chair of the Workforce Protections Subcommittee. In addition, he serves on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee. For more information on Walberg's work in Congress visit walberg.house.gov.
