Walberg Releases PSA Encouraging Participation in Drug Take Back Day
Washington, D.C.—Congressman Tim Walberg today released a public service announcement encouraging residents of Michigan's 7th District to participate in National Prescription Drug Take Back Day on Saturday, October 28. The service provides an opportunity for citizens to safely and securely dispose of their expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs at an authorized disposal site in their community.
"As part of my ongoing effort to combat the opioid crisis, I wanted to make you aware of an important upcoming opportunity for you to help," said Congressman Walberg. "National Prescription Drug Take Back Day is an opportunity for our community to dispose of expired prescription drugs in a safe and responsible way—no questions asked. It's also an opportunity to raise awareness and educate our friends and neighbors about the potential for opioid abuse. No effort is too small, and each of us can do our part."
Medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse, and abuse. The usual methods for disposing of unused medicines—flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash—both pose potential safety and health hazards. At the DEA's last Take Back Day event in April, Americans turned in 450 tons—over 900,000 pounds—of prescription drugs at nearly 5,500 sites around the country.
