Walberg Introduces the Medal of Honor Priority Care Act
January 13, 2015
Washington, D.C. – Congressman Tim Walberg reintroduced his legislation, H.R. 272 or the Medal of Honor Priority Care Act, to ensure living Medal of Honor recipients receive timely access to their health benefits. The Department of Veterans Affairs uses a priority scale to determine eligibility for health care services, and this legislation would place Medal of Honor recipients, who are currently allocated to Priority Group 3, in the highest priority group.
"Medal of Honor recipients not only answered their nation's call to service but they bravely went above and beyond the call of duty when put in harm's way. We have a sacred obligation to make sure that these distinguished heroes have access to the high-quality care they deserve whenever they need it," said Walberg.
The Medal of Honor is the nation's highest medal for valor in combat that can be awarded to members of the armed forces. There are currently 79 living recipients of the Medal of Honor, including two from Michigan: Corporal Duane E. Dewey and Private First Class Robert E. Simanek both received the decoration for their heroic actions in the Korean War.
Congressman Walberg serves on the House Education and the Workforce Committee as Chair of the Workforce Protections Subcommittee. In addition, he serves on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee. For more information on Walberg's work in Congress visit walberg.house.gov.
