Walberg, Energy & Commerce Committee visit Southern Border to Pursue Energy and Border Solutions

February 16, 2023

McAllen, Texas -- Congressman Tim Walberg (MI-05) joined other members of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce to see firsthand the ongoing national security crisis at the U.S.-Mexico border. Rep. Walberg toured the southern border and heard directly from U.S. Customs and Border Protections (CBP) officials about the crisis. He also participated in a joint field hearing held by the Subcommittees on Health and Oversight & Investigations to discuss the trafficking of dangerous drugs like fentanyl. The Subcommittee on Energy, Climate, and Grid Security also held a field hearing in Midland, Texas, focused on unleashing American energy production.

β€œA top priority of the Republican-led House is to force Congress to break out of the Washington echo chamber and not just bring the concerns of the rest of the country to the attention of Congress, but bring the official business of Congress to the rest of America,” said Rep. Walberg. β€œIn Fiscal Year 2022 alone, U.S. Customs and Border Protection seized nearly 15,000 pounds of fentanyl at the southern border. This fentanyl is trafficked across the country into our community and during the joint hearing, I raised concerns expressed by a constituent from Dowagiac on how Michiana is impacted by fentanyl. This crisis is directly threatening the safety of our community. While at the border, I had the opportunity to discuss the dire situation with our brave U.S. Customs and Border Protections officers. These field hearings demonstrate how we can bring different perspectives to official congressional business as we provide legislative solutions to secure our border, protect our communities from dangerous drugs, and restore our energy dominance.”
