Walberg, Colleagues Unveil Legislative Proposals to Hold Big Tech Accountable

July 28, 2021

Washington, D.C.—Congressman Tim Walberg (MI-07) today joined his Republican colleagues on the Energy and Commerce Committee in unveiling a comprehensive package of discussion draft bills to hold Big Tech accountable. The series of legislative proposals focus on improving transparency and content moderation accountability, reforming Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, promoting competition, and preventing illegal and harmful activity on their platforms. In the package, Walberg is leading a provision to amend Section 230 to remove Big Tech's liability protections for claims based on cyberbullying.

"Without question, the American people have lost trust in Big Tech on a host of issues—ranging from censoring content to failing to protect consumers," said Rep. Walberg. "As it stands, the social media landscape is fraught with cyberbullying—particularly among young people—and we need to do more to combat this problem. I am pleased to join my colleagues in developing thoughtful solutions that will better safeguard children online and bring much-needed accountability measures to Big Tech."

"Guided by our Big Tech Accountability Platform, we are releasing discussion draft bills for Big Tech to be transparent, uphold American values for free speech, and stop their abuse of power that is harming our children. Our goal is for these drafts to lead to concrete legislation. Every Republican member of the Energy and Commerce Committee is leading on solutions, and I'm grateful for their hard work to drive meaningful and needed change," said Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers, Republican Leader of the House Energy and Commerce Committee.
