Walberg Calls on Democrats to Pass Critical DHS Funding Amidst Heightened Security Concerns

Today, Congressman Tim Walberg (MI-05) released the following statement calling on Democrats to end the Department of Homeland Security's shutdown by passing the funding bill for the agency. 

"The Democrats' shutdown of the Department of Homeland Security is jeopardizing our national security," said Rep. Walberg. "Due to the ongoing conflict with Iran and heightened security concerns, we need to strengthen our defenses rather than engage in political maneuvers that undermine our ability to protect our homeland. I urge my Democratic colleagues to quit their partisan games and instead support the bipartisan funding for DHS to ensure that the department has the necessary resources to carry out its critical mission of keeping our communities safe from any threats."

Background

• On January 19, the House Appropriations Committee announced the conferenced Department of Homeland Security funding bill that was negotiated on a bipartisan, bicameral basis.
• On January 22, House Republicans passed this full-year funding bill for the Department of Homeland Security.
• Democrats voted against this previously negotiated bill in the Senate on February 12.
• On February 14, the Department of Homeland Security shut down, impacting FEMA, the Coast Guard, Secret Service, CISA, and other critical security operations.
