Walberg Applauds President Trump for Protecting the Great Lakes from Invasive Carp

May 9, 2025

Today, President Trump signed a memorandum directing his Administration to implement measures to protect the Great Lakes from invasive carp. The memorandum expresses support for the Brandon Road Interbasin Project, a joint project between the federal government and the states of Illinois and Michigan that would prevent invasive carp from migrating from the Mississippi River basin into Michigan. Congressman Tim Walberg (MI-05) released the following statement on President Trump's action.

"I applaud President Trump and his Administration for their strong leadership and unwavering commitment to prioritizing the needs of Michiganders," said Rep. Walberg. "The Great Lakes are a national treasure, offering many recreational opportunities and supporting a multi-billion dollar fishing industry. By advancing construction of the Brandon Road project, President Trump is delivering on his promises and preserving the future of the Great Lakes ecosystem and our economy."

Background

In February, Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker halted the Brandon Road Interbasin Project, jeopardizing efforts to keep invasive Asian Carp out of the Great Lakes. In response, Congressman Tim Walberg (MI-05) partnered with Congressmen Jack Bergman (MI-01), John Moolenaar (MI-02), and John James (MI-10) to send a letter to Governor Pritzker calling for him to reverse course on this politically charged decision.

You can read the full letter here.

Congressman Walberg has been a longtime supporter of the project, visiting the Brandon Road Lock and Dam in 2019 to tour the facility and see firsthand where recommended measures could be deployed to protect the Great Lakes from Asian carp. He also had previously supported legislation to require the Army Corps of Engineers to expedite completion of the Brandan Road Study, which provided the guidance necessary for the project.

Congressman Walberg serves as a member of the House Committee on Natural Resources. For more information on his work in Congress, please visit walberg.house.gov.
