Rep Walberg Presents Purple Heart To Afghanistan Vet
Today, Congressman Tim Walberg presented First Sergeant Jerry J. Richards, Jr., a Battle Creek native, with the Purple Heart medal for injuries he sustained while serving in Afghanistan.
“There is no greater privilege than honoring a war veteran for his bravery and faithful service to our country. It’s because of men like First Sergeant Richards that we enjoy such freedom in America. For that, we say thank you,” commented Congressman Walberg following the award presentation.
On October 28, 2008 First Sergeant Richards was injured after a rocket propelled grenade (RPG) was launched at the Blackhawk helicopter he was traveling in near Ghanzi, Afghanistan. The aircraft was forced to make a hard landing. While dismounting the aircraft, Mr. Richards and those traveling with him were hit with small arms fire. He sustained multiple injuries to his right foot and continues to suffer from symptoms of traumatic brain injury.
“Serving my country has been the most gratifying experience of my life. People would often ask me why I do it. My response has always been that it’s never been about me, it’s about the brave and dedicated men and women that I serve shoulder to shoulder with…soldiers with such selfish service that are willing to go abroad to conduct the nation’s business and make the ultimate sacrifice if need be,” said Mr. Richards about his time in service.
First Sergeant Richards served in the United States Army for 22 years.
