WSJM: Walberg praises legislation seeking recognition of religious groups on college campuses

Congressman Tim Walberg is hailing U.S. House Education and Workforce Committee passage of several bills related to college campuses this week.

In particular, Walberg is highlighting the Equal Campus Access Act, which he says would require public colleges and universities to give religious student organizations the same access and privileges as other student groups.

“Protecting religious freedom on campuses across America is essential to ensuring higher education serves all students,” Walberg said. “This past week, I was proud to see my bill, the Equal Campus Access Act, passed through the House Education and Workforce Committee. Religious groups deserve the same rights as other student organizations, and I look forward to ensuring we protect freedom of expression on the campuses.”

Specifically, the bill amends the Higher Education Act of 1965 to withhold federal funding from public colleges and universities that deny access to a religious student organization of any right, benefit, or privilege that is otherwise afforded to other student organizations at the institution. That includes full access to facilities and official recognition of the organization.
