WSJM: Walberg encouraged by committee review of Cars Act

June 5, 2026

Congressman Tim Walberg says his Choice in Automobile Retail Sales, or CARS Act, is gaining momentum after receiving a hearing before the House Energy and Commerce Committee’s Environment Subcommittee this week.

The legislation is designed to prevent federal regulations from limiting consumer vehicle choices or effectively mandating specific technologies, like electric vehicles.

Walberg says the plan would prohibit the EPA from using its authority under the Clean Air Act to require certain vehicle technologies or restrict the availability of vehicles based on engine type.

The future of the auto industry should be determined by innovation, not burdensome mandates that raise costs on Michigan families,” Walberg said. “While President Trump has eliminated the de facto electric vehicle mandate imposed by the Biden administration, my bill, the CARS Act, would prevent future unrealistic government mandates from being forced upon consumers.”

The bill would also require the EPA to revise regulations that limit consumer access to new vehicles. It’s in response to federal vehicle standards adopted in 2024 under the Biden administration, which projected that more than half of new vehicles sold by the early 2030s could be electric.

Walberg adds the CARS Act will also help to keep prices down.
