WSJM: Broadband legislation from Walberg passes House committee

September 16, 2026

Legislation from Congressman Tim Walberg intended to implement a national strategy for broadband development has been approved by a U.S. House committee.

Walberg’s “Proper Leadership to Align Networks for Broadband Act,” or the PLAN for Broadband Act, would require the National Telecommunications and Information Administration to develop a strategy for management of federal broadband programs. It would also require the administration to consider applications to build broadband infrastructure on federal property.

Walberg says broadband is critical in the modern economy.

“Michigan students, workers, farmers, and small businesses need reliable access to broadband services more than ever before,” Walberg said. “I was glad to see the House Energy and Commerce Committee advance my legislation, the Plan for Broadband Act, to improve the efficiency and coordination of federal broadband programs so that we can streamline efforts and accelerate the deployment of broadband.”

The legislation was approved by the House Energy and Commerce Committee Wednesday. Walberg says it will lead to a roadmap that streamlines deployment efforts and is a “commonsense step” to increase reliable high-speed internet access for rural communities.

The bill now goes on to the full U.S. House.
