WSBT: Area lawmakers react after passing "big, beautiful bill" in House of Representatives

May 22, 2025

President Trump's so called "big beautiful bill" is now in the hands of the Senate.

The House passed the bill early Thursday morning on a razor thin margin of 215 to 214.

All but two-House Republicans voted in favor of the massive budget package.

The legislation will now head to the senate where some republicans have already voiced some opposition.

Congressional leaders want to have the bill to President Trump's desk by July 4th.

Northern Indiana republican Congressman Rudy Yakym voted in favor of the bill.

He sent us this statement saying:

"Our “One, Big, Beautiful Bill” is the most pro-growth, pro-family, pro-worker, and pro-America legislation in a generation. It makes the Trump Tax Cuts permanent, puts more money in Americans’ pockets by eliminating taxes on tips and overtime, and delivers historic relief for working families."

Southwest Michigan Congressman Tim Walberg also voted for the measure.

He said, "The One Big Beautiful Bill Act will prevent the average taxpayer in Michigan's 5th District from seeing a 27% tax hike, make significant investments in our communities... and implement critical policies like no tax on tips or overtime pay to support American workers.”

4th District Congressman Bill Huizenga (R) Michigan sent this statement that says in part:

“Additionally, this measure provides relief for seniors while delivering on President Trump’s promise of no tax on tips as well as no tax on overtime which will help Michiganders keep more of their hard-earned money.”
