WLEN: Walberg unveils 10-bill plan to restructure Education Dept.

July 27, 2026

House Education and Workforce Committee Chairman Tim Walberg has introduced a 10-bill legislative package called “Less Bureaucracy, Better Education.”

The bills would transfer key functions of the U.S. Department of Education to other federal agencies, including moving K-12 and higher education programs to the Department of Labor.

Other bills in the package address workforce development, tribal education, child care for student parents, foreign medical accreditation, international education oversight, foreign gift transparency, family engagement and student aid.

The legislation would codify interagency agreements already used by the Trump administration to restructure the department administratively.

Democrats have argued that restructuring is illegal. The bills were introduced by Walberg and eight other House Republicans.
