Michigan Congressman Tim Walberg is backing legislation aimed at preventing fraud in federal student aid programs.
Speaking on the House floor Tuesday, Walberg supported the No Aid for Ghost Students Act of 2026, a bill designed to stop criminals from using stolen or synthetic identities to file FAFSA applications and collect federal aid.
Federal investigators and colleges have documented cases of so-called “ghost students” in recent years, though Walberg also argued Biden administration policies contributed to the problem, a claim that remains politically disputed.
The legislation would place additional identity verification and fraud prevention requirements into federal law.
