WILX: Rep. Walberg announces ‘student opportunities’ for America’s 250th birthday

Michigan Congressman Tim Walberg (MI-05) is informing Michiganders of multiple opportunities for students in honor of America’s 250th anniversary.

“These wonderful opportunities will allow young students within Michigan’s 5th District to explore those founding stories and gain a deeper appreciation for the rich history that continues to define who we are today. I wish all those participating the best of luck!” Walberg said in a statement.

The congressman’s office provided a list of the opportunities:

  • Presidential 1776 Award: A new national civics competition for students formed in partnership with the U.S. Department of Education. High school students can compete for national recognition with up to $250,000 of scholarships at stake. Interested students must register by February 21, 2026.
  • America’s Field Trip: A nationwide contest that invites students across the country in grades 3–12 to share their perspectives on what America means to them, with the chance to earn a field trip experience at some of the nation’s most iconic historic and cultural landmarks. Students are asked to submit writing or original artwork by March 30, 2026, in response to the contest’s prompt: “What does America mean to you?”
  • America’s Startup: A national collegiate startup competition created to spotlight early-stage business ideas with the potential to drive America’s future economic, technological, and societal progress. Participants must submit a proposal and pitch video outlining their business idea by March 31, 2026. Selected teams will advance through a multi-stage review process, which includes a live pitch experience.
  • Bookmark Design Challenge: A design challenge hosted by the Office of the Second Lady of the United States in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) that invites students to create an original, hand-drawn bookmark that shows what America means to them. K-8 students must submit their bookmarks by March 31, 2026.

Walberg’s office is also looking for art submissions from high school students in the 5th Congressional District for the 2026 Congressional Art Competition.

The theme is “America 250,” and the winner will be displayed in the Cannon Tunnel to the U.S. Capitol.
