WILX: Hillsdale army veteran named congressman’s Veteran of the Month

December 22, 2025

Michigan Congressman Tim Walberg made a stop in Hillsdale to honor a local hero.

Representative Walberg started his “Veteran of the Month” program in September to honor veterans in Michigan’s Fifth Congressional District.

This month’s honor went to Renae Shircliff from Hillsdale.

Shircliff is an Army veteran who served as an Army specialist tank mechanic and duty driver. She is now the current director of the Hillsdale County Veterans Affairs Office.

She spoke about why she enjoys working in the VA.

“It’s important to support veterans because they were not treated well when they came home especially Vietnam veterans, and they’ve had to wait for so long anything to be recognized or any sort of benefits so I want to make sure that every veteran gets the benefits they deserve,” she said.

Shircliff says she was surprised and honored to receive the award.
