South Michigan News: Walberg recognizes Patrick Knight as Veteran of the Month for July in Hillsdale County

Congressman Tim Walberg recognized Patrick Knight of Hillsdale as the Veteran of the Month for July, according to a July 20 announcement. Walberg presented Knight with the Congressional Record containing remarks honoring his service and dedication to the country.

Patrick Knight served in the United States Navy as a Search and Rescue Helicopter Crewman from 1966 to 1970. During active duty, he was assigned to Helicopter Combat Support Squadron One at NAS Imperial Beach in California and later overseas with Helicopter Combat Support Squadron Seven, known as the 'Sea Devils.' While serving with HC-7, Knight assisted in rescuing pilots shot down in Vietnam and surrounding waters, contributing to approximately 150 pilot rescues by his squadron.

Knight received several honors including the Navy Commendation Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Meritorious Unit Citation, Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and Combat Search and Rescue Air Wings. In 1971, President Richard Nixon awarded the Sea Devils a Presidential Unit Citation for extraordinary heroism during rescue operations under adverse conditions.

After military service, Knight spent 32 years with Riverview Police Force and retired as Chief of Police. He is also a member of VFW Post 1136 in Wyandotte and serves on both the Emergency Telephone Services Board for Hillsdale County and Board of the Hillsdale Senior Center.

"From his courageous work as a Sea Devil helping to save the lives of downed pilots, to his decades of service protecting his community in the Riverview Police Force, Patrick has demonstrated unwavering dedication, courage, and sacrifice. Patrick serves as an inspiration to us all."

Congressman Walberg's office is accepting submissions for its Veteran of the Month program honoring exemplary veterans from Michigan's 5th Congressional District each month.

Tim Walberg has represented Michigan’s 5th district since replacing Mark Schauer in Congress in 2011; he previously served in Michigan’s House from 1983 through 1999 and graduated from Taylor University with a BA degree, according to information provided by Congressman Tim Walberg's office.
