South Michigan News: Walberg honors Samuel Dougherty as Calhoun County Veteran of the Month

The office of Congressman Tim Walberg recognized Samuel "Sam" Dougherty of East Leroy as the Veteran of the Month for August at the Calhoun County Fair, according to an Aug. 17 announcement. Dougherty was presented with the Congressional Record containing remarks from Walberg honoring his service and dedication to the country.
Dougherty served in the United States Marine Corps Reserve as a Combat Engineer from 1988 to 1994. After his military service, he worked as Director of Southwest Michigan Operations for the Michigan Workforce Development Institute, assisting job seekers—including veterans—in finding employment opportunities. Since 2023, Dougherty has served as Michigan State Representative for Helmets to Hardhats, a national nonprofit that connects military service members, veterans, and reservists with careers in building trades.
Dougherty also volunteered for two decades at a freedom hunt for disabled veterans at Fort Custer and currently volunteers with the Michigan Wounded and Returning Warrior Program. For his volunteer work supporting veterans, he received the Marine Corps League Distinguished Citizen Award.
"I am honored to recognize Sam Dougherty whose continued service and dedication to serving others represents the best of our armed forces," said Rep. Tim Walberg. "From his time serving as a Combat Engineer with the Marine Corps Reserve to his role helping fellow veterans find reliable employment and care, Sam's commitment to his country and local community has never wavered. I commend him for his service, which serves as an inspiration to us all."
Congressman Walberg's office is accepting submissions for its Veteran of the Month program, which aims to honor exemplary contributions by veterans in Michigan's 5th Congressional District each month by recognizing one outstanding veteran who demonstrates exceptional commitment both in military service and community involvement.
Tim Walberg is currently serving in Congress representing Michigan’s 5th district; he has held this position since replacing Mark Schauer in 2011 after previously serving in the Michigan House of Representatives from 1983 to 1999 and graduating from Taylor University with a BA, according to Congressman Tim Walberg's office.
