South Michigan News: House Education and Workforce Committee highlights tax cuts for working families on Tax Day

The House Education and Workforce Committee Chairman Tim Walberg announced on Apr. 15 that the Working Families Tax Cuts are delivering results for students, workers, and families by lowering costs, increasing accountability, and expanding career opportunities.
This announcement is significant because it addresses concerns about student debt, access to education, and responsible use of federal education funds. The committee’s reforms aim to help taxpayers while ensuring educational programs offer real value.
“The Working Families Tax Cuts represent one of the most significant higher education reforms in decades,” said Chairman Walberg. “On Tax Day, we’re highlighting how these policies not only provide relief for working families, but also fix a broken system that left too many students with debt and too few opportunities.”
According to the committee’s statement, these reforms have already saved taxpayers an estimated $284 billion by ensuring federal education dollars are spent responsibly. The changes include holding colleges accountable by stopping federal loans from supporting degree programs that do not improve graduates’ earning potential or consistently underperform. Institutions are now required to share responsibility for students’ long-term success.
The legislation also introduces loan limits for graduate, professional, and Parent PLUS loans while giving financial aid administrators more flexibility to limit borrowing based on individual needs. It aims to simplify repayment options through fixed or income-driven plans that scale payments with income levels and provide pathways out of default.
In addition, Pell Grant eligibility has been expanded to cover high-quality short-term workforce programs focused on job placement and earnings outcomes. States will have more authority to align training with in-demand industries while safeguards ensure aid reaches those who need it most.
The House Education and Workforce Committee manages federal programs related to education, labor, health care policy, and workforce development according to its official website. The committee also influences national policy on issues such as student loans and worker protections according to its official website, serving within the legislative sector with jurisdiction over both education and labor matters according to its official website.
