South Michigan News: House Education and Workforce Committee advances 10 bills on education and workforce issues
The Committee on Education and Workforce advanced 10 bills addressing a range of education, workforce, and parental rights issues during a markup session in Washington on July 21.
Committee Chairman Tim Walberg said, "Today's markup reflects our commitment to advancing commonsense policies that put students, parents, workers, and job creators first. These bills prepare students for the future, modernize our workforce system, support employers and small businesses, protect parental rights, and ensure our laws promote opportunity, accountability, and economic growth. I thank my colleagues for their work in advancing these important measures."
Among the legislation passed were H.R. 8781 (Title IX Clarification Act of 2026), which codifies the Supreme Court's recent ruling defining "sex" under Title IX as biological sex; H.R. 4986 (Parents Opt-in Protection Act), which strengthens parental consent protections under the Protection of Pupil Rights Amendment; H.R. 8747 (K-12 AI Literacy and Readiness Act of 2026), supporting schools in preparing students and educators to use artificial intelligence; H.R. 8183 (MATCH Act of 2026), aimed at modernizing state workforce data systems; H.R. 9723 (Fit Future Act), which codifies the President's Council on Sports, Fitness, and Nutrition; H.R. 8660 (VEST Act), clarifying rules around employee stock compensation; H.R. 8347 (RURAL Healthcare Act), addressing healthcare provider classifications in rural areas; H.R. 6213 (Heat Workforce Standards Act of 2026), preventing implementation of certain federal heat injury regulations; H.R. 8775 (Ending Predator Access to Union Power Act), prohibiting individuals convicted of sex offenses against minors from union leadership roles; and H.R. 5267 (American Franchise Act), establishing standards for franchise industry employment relationships.
The House Education and Workforce Committee manages federal programs concerning education, labor, health care policy related to employment-based plans or school nutrition programs as well as workforce development initiatives, according to the official website.
