Politico: Walberg subpoenas Chicago Public Schools superintendent

May 13, 2026

House Education and Workforce Chair Tim Walberg (R-Mich.) subpoenaed the head of Chicago Public Schools on Wednesday to appear before the panel next month.

The panel is compelling Macquline King, superintendent and CEO of Chicago Public Schools, to testify before the committee for a June 10 hearing on parental rights, inappropriate content and other topics.

The subpoena follows the committee offering multiple alternative dates after the school system said she would not be able to participate in the hearing because of scheduling conflicts and open investigations by the federal Education Department, according to a letter sent to the superintendent notifying the district of the subpoena.

Walberg, in the letter, said the district “offered two excuses” but “the Committee is not persuaded that either warrants you not participating in the hearing.”

“Those same arguments, moreover, will no longer be legally valid reasons for refusing to appear in the face of a duly issued subpoena. Therefore, the Committee has determined it is necessary to compel your attendance at the hearing,” the Michigan Republican wrote.
