Politico: Walberg bill would seal Trump’s plans to move adult education to Labor Department

April 6, 2026

House education chair Tim Walberg (R-Mich.) is looking to give the Labor Department formal control over the federal government's work on adult education.

The move is a part of a broader bill Walberg introduced Monday to reauthorize the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act, the federal law governing workforce development programs that was enacted in 2014.

The bill would advance President Donald Trump’s efforts to shutter the Education Department, following an agreement the Education Department struck last year to have adult education programs managed by the Labor Department.

The legislation comes less than a week after Trump’s fiscal 2027 budget request proposed eliminating funds for adult education and transferring the education agency’s Office of Career, Technical and Adult Education to the Labor Department. Walberg’s WIOA proposal does not include moving career and technical education programs to Labor.

Walberg's bill would instead move all functions and “any officer or employee” under the Adult Education and Family Literacy Act from the Education Department to the Labor Department and take effect one year after the bill is enacted. The authorization and appropriations relating to adult education would also be transferred to Labor.
