Jackson Cit Pat | New U.S. flag flying above Jackson's Post Office after complaints of old flag's condition

April 11, 2014

JACKSON, MI — After numerous community complaints, the flag outside the U.S. Post Office in downtown Jackson was replaced Tuesday, April 8.

The condition of the old flag had been criticized as an obvious violation of the U.S. Flag Act, a law that carries no penalties for violating it.

Fritz Advertising said it received calls from state Rep. Earl Poleski and the Jackson Post Office on Tuesday about re-roping the flagpole to get the old flag down and then raise a new one.

A new flag was raised early Tuesday afternoon.

MLive Jackson readers reacted strongly to the status of the old flag at 113 W. Michigan Ave. after a column by Brad Flory called the flag's condition a disgrace.

bridgiejsc had this to say about the message being sent by the upkeep of the flag:

"Basic flag etiquette is taught in grade school. The Jackson postmaster is obviously NOT PROUD TO BE AMERICAN."

Jana Jamiesondescribed what she claims happened to her after bringing it up to a post office employee:

"I noticed this issue with the flag a few weeks ago. I mentioned it to a postal employee. She pretty much told me that nothing was going to happen and got rude with me. Thanks Brad (Flory) for bringing it to the surface."

tkw0312 took it to the next level and reached out to local politicians about the situation:

"I sent an email to the offices of State Representatives Shirkey and Poleski. Hopefully they will do their civic duty as elected officials and help to fix this issue."

State Rep. Earl Poleski made it clear that U.S. Rep. Tim Walberg's office was working on the situation:

"This is a Federal office. Congressman Walberg's office is aware of this problem and is working intensely upon it."

Officials from Walberg's office confirmed they were in contact with the post office in getting the issue resolved.
