The Hill | Bill would prioritize Medal of Honor recipients for VA healthcare

May 23, 2014

Rep. Tim Walberg (R-Mich.) has introduced a bill to give Medal of Honor recipients the highest priority among veterans seeking access to Veterans Affairs healthcare.

Walberg said that veterans who have received the nation's highest medal for valor in combat should be guaranteed timely access to their health benefits.

"These heroes have put themselves in harm's way, and their valor and gallantry in the face of hostilities earned them the highest accolade in the armed services," Walberg said. "We have a duty to make sure these heroes have access to the VA when they need it."

There are currently 78 living Medal of Honor recipients.

The VA has come under fire in recent weeks, after reports emerged of nationwide delays for veterans seeking healthcare and other benefits. The House passed legislation earlier this week to give the VA secretary authority to fire senior executives, but the Senate has indicated a desire to make changes to the measure.
