July 23, 2023

JACKSON — A Clinton High School student received first place earlier this year as part of the 2023 Congressional Art Competition for Michigan’s 5th District.

Jourdan Young was recognized in late May near the conclusion of the 2022-23 school year for having the winning piece of artwork titled “Michigan Summers.” Her acrylic painting that depicts two girls playing in the sand on the coast of Lake Michigan during the summer with a lighthouse in the background was lauded by Rep. Tim Walberg, R-Tipton, who serves Lenawee County.

Young’s art teacher at Clinton High School is Ashley Kendrek. Her winning artwork will be displayed in the Cannon Tunnel to the United States Capitol Building in Washington D.C.

“2023 was truly a great year of submissions, with many pieces showcasing the natural beauty of Michigan,” Walberg said in a news release. “Hard work, creativity and talent were all demonstrated by many students.”

Second place in the art competition went to Cooper Stewart from Bridgman High School in Berrien County. His entry was titled “Wintry Walk,” and is a photograph of a walkway leading up to a lighthouse in Michigan during the winter season. Stewart’s artwork will be displayed in Walberg’s Niles office.
