Your Bill for Socialism: $355,000

This week, the Council of Economic Advisers released a report revealing the severe economic cost for American taxpayers if the Democratic Socialists of America's top policies were adopted: $49 TRILLION or $355,000 per household. Under these costly policies, like reopening the border, ripping away your health care coverage, and forcing you to pay off the student loans of others, inflation would soar, small businesses would struggle, and everyday costs for Americans would skyrocket. House Republicans have put more money back in your pocket by providing the largest tax cut in American history and policies like no tax on tips, overtime, and Social Security.

We cannot afford the bill of $355,000 for each family under the Democratic Socialists of America. I remain committed to continuing to pursue pro-growth policies that grow your wages, strengthen our economy, and make life more affordable for hardworking Michigan families. Read more about the real cost of Socialism here.

Combating Human Trafficking

Human trafficking is a horrific practice that happens in our backyards and preys on the vulnerable. Reports showed tens of thousands of unaccompanied minors were released to supposedly vetted sponsors who then forced them into illegal labor. This week, I was proud to see my bill, the Enhancing Detection of Human Trafficking Act, pass the Senate unanimously after it also passed the House unanimously in March, marking a significant step toward addressing this horrible crime and protecting our communities. This bipartisan legislation would help confront this crisis by ensuring Department of Labor employees are trained to spot trafficking, understand current trends, and quickly refer suspected cases to law enforcement, strengthening early detection to protect victims.

Honoring a Hillsdale County Veteran

On Monday, I also had the privilege of recognizing Turner Korotzer of Hillsdale as the Veteran of the Month for September. Turner enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 2015, serving as a Network Administrator with the Headquarters Battalion of the 1st Marine Division at Camp Pendleton in California. During his service, Turner deployed twice to Kuwait and later to Syria with the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit. After returning home, he became involved with several veteran service organizations, including the Hillsdale American Legion, where he took on a leadership role organizing Hillsdale’s annual Independence Day fireworks celebration. Turner has also demonstrated a strong commitment to supporting fellow veterans and fire departments across Hillsdale through his volunteer work with the Major Henry Holloway Canteen Unit. His dedication to both our nation and community serves as an example for us all, and I am grateful for his continued service.

Strengthening Our Workforce

I had the opportunity to stop by the Southern Michigan Center for Science and Industry in Hudson to learn more about how they are preparing Americans for good-paying, high-skill careers and connecting employers with the skilled workers they need to succeed. As Chair of the Education and Workforce Committee, I understand firsthand how the workforce is evolving rapidly, and legislation designed over a decade ago is no longer meeting today’s demands. Earlier this year, the committee advanced my bill, A Stronger Workforce for America Act, which updates the workforce system to connect more Americans with in-demand skills, strengthen employer-led training, and hold the workforce system accountable for results.

Empowering Small Businesses in Jackson

I recently enjoyed visiting Hirst Electric, a family-owned business that has been operating in Jackson since 1986, and seeing all the critical work they do to make sure their customers have access to the energy they need to thrive. To empower small businesses like theirs, I voted for the historic Working Families Tax Cuts, which was signed into law last year. Provisions in this legislation help small businesses grow by making permanent the 20% small business deduction, creating over 1 million new small business jobs and generating $750 billion in economic growth. Thank you to Hirst Electric for letting me stop by!

Reminder: Military Academy Nominations

Each year, I have the privilege of nominating a limited number of high school and college students to four of the five military service academies. The honor of attending a service academy comes with an obligation and commitment to serve in the military for a minimum of five years upon graduation.
