Bipartisan Heroin Task Force Unveils Legislative Agenda

This week I joined with leaders of the Bipartisan Heroin Task Force to release our legislative agenda for the 115th Congress. The agenda includes commonsense, bipartisan legislation to address the opioid epidemic from the perspective of law enforcement, prevention, treatment, and recovery. One key piece of the group's agenda is "Jessie's Law," a bipartisan bill I introduced with Rep. Debbie Dingell earlier this year.

Protecting the Great Lakes from Asian Carp

In a speech on the House floor this week, I called on the Army Corp of Engineers to immediately release the Brandon Road Study so we can move forward with long-term solutions to combat Asian carp. I also joined with the entire Michigan congressional delegation, Democrats and Republicans alike, to send a letter to the Trump administration to urge them to release the study. We simply cannot allow Asian carp to wreak havoc on the Great Lakes.

Keeping our Communities Safe

This week the House passed Kate's Law, which protects public safety by enhancing penalties for deported felons who illegally reenter the United States. The bipartisan bill is named after Kate Steinle, who was murdered two years ago in San Francisco by an illegal immigrant with a felony record who had been deported five times. While we can't bring her back or erase her family's pain, we can honor Kate's memory by getting serious about enforcing our immigration laws and keeping our communities safe.

Injured and Amputee Veterans Bill of Rights

I had the opportunity to meet with the National Association for the Advancement of Orthotics and Prosthetics this week to discuss health care. I'm grateful to have their support for the Injured and Amputee Veterans Bill of Rights, my bipartisan bill to help educate and empower the veterans with amputations and physical disabilities as they make important health care decisions.

It was a pleasure to welcome Aspen Schupbach to our nation's capital and congratulate her for winning the 2017 Congressional Art Competition. Aspen graduated from Western High School in Parma this spring and plans to attend Jackson College in the fall.
