The State of American Education
The State of American Education
On Wednesday, the House Education and Workforce Committee held its first hearing under my leadership to evaluate the State of American Education. Results from the most recent National Assessment of Education Progress (NAEP) show that students still have not recovered from the pandemic as students are scoring at lower levels in math and reading than they were in 2019. We must take action to ensure that students are provided with the skills they need to be successful in our modern workforce. We also must empower parents, combat the rampant antisemitism and stifling of free speech on college campuses, and reform our higher education financing system. I look forward to working with all of the members of the committee to meet these challenges.

Fighting the Fentanyl CrisisIllicit fentanyl poisonings are now the number one cause of death among Americans aged 18 to 49. This week, House Republicans complemented the efforts of President Trump to address this deadly crisis by passing the HALT Fentanyl Act. I was proud to cosponsor and vote in favor of this commonsense legislation which would permanently place fentanyl-related substances in Schedule I under the Controlled Substances Act. The HALT Fentanyl Act will provide law enforcement with the tools necessary to keep these dangerous substances off our streets and protect our communities.

Protecting Women and Girls in SportsOn Wednesday, we celebrated National Girls and Women in Sports Day. I was honored to receive an invitation from President Trump to witness the signing of an executive order to ensure that female athletes can compete fairly and safely. I even met an athlete from Michigan who was also in attendance. This executive order builds on the efforts of House Republicans who passed the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act last month. We must continue to safeguard opportunities to level the playing field for female athletes.

Unleashing American Energy ProductionOver the course of the last four years, the Biden-Harris administration waged a war on American energy. On Friday, the House voted to bolster our energy security by passing the Protecting American Energy Production Act which would prohibit any federal moratorium on the use of fracking. This represents a vital step in reversing the failed policies of the previous administration, promoting American energy dominance, and lowering prices for families across Michigan. I remain committed to supporting an all-of-the-above approach to ensure that Americans have access to an affordable and reliable supply of energy.

Supporting Career and Technical EducationI recently had the opportunity to tour the Jackson Career Center and hear more from students about the real-world experience they are gaining from Career and Technical Education programs. Expanding these programs is particularly important for Michigan, the heartland of American manufacturing, where high-skilled jobs are a vital component of our state's economy. We must close the skills gap and increase opportunities for students and workers to bolster our workforce. |
