Pursuing Commonsense Solutions

This week I had the opportunity to hear from constituents in Eaton Rapids and Coldwater about their top concerns. It came as no surprise that many of the same crises continue to come up in conversation. Inflation, gas prices, the border crisis, and drug epidemic are touching the lives of everyone.

Under the Biden administration, sadly, we're living through crisis after crisis. As your representative in Congress, I am supporting commonsense solutions to tackle these challenges, including:

  • American Energy Independence from Russia Act would unleash American energy production. By increasing supply, we can lower the financial strain Americans feel from the surging energy prices.
  • Strategic Production Response Act would lower gas prices, protect the Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR), and strengthen our nation’s energy security.
  • Inflation Prevention Act would prevent legislation estimated by the Congressional Budget Office to increase inflation, until the year-over-year inflation rate is under a specified percent.
  • HALT Fentanyl Act would permanently place fentanyl-related substances into Schedule I of the Controlled Substances Act.
  • Parents Bill of Rights Act would empower parents by requiring both transparency and accountability regarding curriculum decisions.
  • Lower Costs, More Cures Act takes a multifaceted and bipartisan approach to lower drug costs.
  • Border Security for America Act would bring back effective border security policies like wall construction and dynamic physical infrastructure and implement modern technologies and deterrents.
  • Finish the Wall Act would require the Biden administration to resume construction of the border wall system.
  • Eliminating Global Market Distortions to Protect American Jobs Act would strengthen trade remedy laws and protect American workers from unfair trade practices conducted by countries like China.
  • Protecting Family and Small Business Tax Cuts Act would extend the standard deduction rate which has been doubled since 2017. Additionally, it would also extend the child tax credit, which has also been doubled since 2017.
  • NYET Act would impose more severe sanctions on Russia and provide greater assistance to our allies in Europe.
  • IRS Biometrics Ban Act was authored in response to reports the IRS was demanding facial recognition data from taxpayers. This bill would prohibit the IRS from collecting biometric data from taxpayers as a condition of receiving their services.

Hearing from Students

I also had the pleasure of meeting students at Coldwater High School this week to answer their questions about our government and hear what is on their mind. These government classes had incredibly thoughtful insights and comments on a number of topics including finding common ground, gas prices, Russia's invasion of Ukraine, national security, and more. It was a pleasure to talk to them about these issues and I am always encouraged with the future of our great nation after meeting with such superb students.

Celebrating National Agriculture Week

This week was National Agriculture Week, an opportunity to recognize and celebrate the hardworking men and women who feed our nation. Michigan farmers work day in and day out to provide for their families and neighbors, and we are so thankful for their dedication and tireless work. Agriculture plays a critical role in Michigan’s economy and way of life, and it is my privilege and honor to work for farmers in Congress.
