Safely Reopening Schools Since last summer, I have been advocating for safely reopening schools. Incorporating the appropriate health precautions while welcoming students back is a top priority. Each school district is unique and the approach to re-opening is not one-size-fits-all. The longer we delay getting students back in the classroom more regularly so they can get the attention they deserve, the longer we continue to set back a generation of students. Our children don't belong to a special interest group or political party. They're just kids. As parents and policymakers, it is up to us to advocate for their best interests. Removing Barriers for Broadband For rural areas in Michigan, the lack of access to reliable high-speed broadband has only become more apparent during the pandemic. This week, I joined my Energy and Commerce Committee colleagues to introduce a solutions-oriented roadmap to increasing broadband infrastructure in the communities that need it most. Included in this broader legislative package is H.R. 1084, legislation I authored to remove barriers for broadband buildout. |
Visiting Saline Lectronics This week I stopped by Saline Lectronics, Inc. to see their work manufacturing a device used to monitor and track boxes with shipments of the COVID-19 vaccine. Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, so many businesses here in Michigan have either retooled to help produce critical supplies like Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), or have helped fight the virus including with vaccine development, production, and vaccine shipping logistics. |
Developing a 21st Century Workforce In a Communications and Technology Subcommittee hearing this week, we discussed the importance of developing a skilled workforce to accelerate a continued broadband buildout. I highlighted a Manchester constituent's story on driving to the parking lots of local businesses so her children could complete school assignments. We also discussed how Monroe County Community College is leading the way in developing a 21st century workforce through their innovative programs.
