Revitalizing Our Workforce
Supporting our workforce and enabling job growth is one of my top priorities in Congress. I had the opportunity to tour the newly opened Advanced Manufacturing Training Center in Jackson and discuss recent initiatives to strengthen our workforce development system. Last year, the Working Families Tax Cuts were signed into law, which included innovative education provisions that I helped draft. The legislation expanded Pell Grant eligibility to those who enroll in high-quality, short-term career and technical education programs, enabling us to fill workforce-related gaps. Please know that I will continue to work with my colleagues to expand opportunity, strengthen our workforce, and connect students with rewarding careers.
Expanding School Choice
Last year, Republicans' Working Families Tax Cuts became law, delivering the largest expansion of school choice in history. As Chair of the Education and Workforce Committee, I partnered with Rep. Adrian Smith (R-NE), Rep. Burgess Owens (R-UT), and Sen. Cassidy (R-LA) to introduce the Educational Opportunities Expansion Package to expand educational opportunities for students nationwide by removing the current state opt-in requirement and ensuring that scholarship donors are not restricted in their giving based on their marital status. I support giving every family the opportunity to benefit, providing parents with greater flexibility to choose the educational environment that best supports their child’s needs. All children deserve access to an education that helps them achieve the American Dream, no matter their background or address.
Bringing Back Michigan Manufacturing
I enjoyed visiting Evonik Industries in Sand Creek to discuss how policies are bringing back American jobs and manufacturing. For too long, we’ve seen how burdensome regulations have led to the offshoring of manufacturing jobs, harming our economy and reducing opportunities for hardworking Michiganders. However, policies in the Working Families Tax Cuts are driving investment in domestic manufacturing by incentivizing companies to build in the U.S., helping to preserve and create over 7.2 million jobs over the next four years. Businesses like Evonik Industries contribute to southern Michigan's economic prosperity, and I am proud to support legislation that ensures businesses like them have the support necessary to strengthen their operations and protect the future of American industry.
Supporting Our Veterans
It was great to join folks at the Visiting Angels and Family Hog Roast in Monroe. During the visit, I enjoyed meeting with local community members and veterans to thank them for their service and learn more about the issues that matter most to them. Our veterans have sacrificed so much on behalf of our nation, and we owe them an immeasurable debt of gratitude. I remain committed to working with my colleagues to increase access to programs and benefits that provide support, stability, and the maintenance of dignity for our servicemembers and veterans. Thank you to Visiting Angels for letting me stop by, and it was great learning more about all of the work they do to support veterans and seniors in our local community.
2026 Congressional App Challenge
Reminder: The 2026 Congressional App Challenge has begun! I invite all middle and high school students in Michigan's 5th District to create and submit an original app for a chance to win. It’s a wonderful opportunity for students to explore and enhance their computer science skills by creating and exhibiting a software application for web, PC, tablet, mobile, robotics, or other platform of their choice.
