Restoring the 5th Amendment
Curbing Civil Asset Forfeiture Abuse
Congressman Jamie Raskin (D-MD) and I introduced sweeping reforms to our nation's civil asset forfeiture laws to defend due process and rein in unjust seizures of private property. H.R. 1895, the Fifth Amendment Integrity Restoration Act (FAIR Act), will raise the level of proof necessary for the federal government to seize property, reform the IRS structuring statute to protect innocent small business owners, and increase transparency and congressional oversight.
Recognizing the Maitland Family
The Maitland family from Jackson recently made history by becoming the first family to visit all 418 National Parks and Units, traveling over 300,000 miles in the process. I spoke on the House floor to recognize their incredible journey and passion for the parks across our great country.
Meeting with Michigan Farmers
We had a good discussion about trade, regulations, environmental stewardship, and other agriculture issues with farmers from Branch, Eaton, Hillsdale, Lenawee, Jackson, Monroe and Washtenaw counties. Thanks to members of the Michigan Farm Bureau for stopping by my office this week to share your thoughts on these important issues.
House Energy Action Team
This week, along with Congressman Steve Scalise (R-LA), we launched the House Energy Action Team to promote innovation and an all-of-the-above energy policy. That's in contrast to extreme policies like the Green New Deal that dictate more taxation, regulation, and government control, threatening to raise energy bills and jeopardize people's jobs.
2019 Congressional Art Competition
Our office is now accepting applications from high school students in Michigan's 7th District for the 2019 Congressional Art Competition. The winning piece of artwork will be displayed in the Cannon Tunnel to the U.S. Capitol, along with the winners from the other congressional districts across the country.
