This week, the first bill under the purview of the Education and Workforce Committee passed the House, the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act. Over 50 years ago, Congress passed Title IX to ensure that women and girls would have equal opportunities both in the classroom and in athletics, and female participation in sports has drastically increased ever since. However, the Biden-Harris administration has pursued a radical regulatory scheme allowing biological males to participate on women’s sports teams. The Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act would strengthen Title IX's protections for women and ensure a safe and level playing field for female athletes.
On Wednesday, the Education and Workforce Committee held an organizing meeting for the 119th Congress. The Education and Workforce Committee maintains jurisdiction that affects every aspect of people's lives. As Chair, I will work to address out-of-control college costs, expand education freedom, and support policies that unleash the ingenuity of the American workforce. It was a pleasure to welcome all of the committee's new and returning members on both sides of the dias. Let's get to work!
We continue to see headline after headline about illegal immigrants who commit heinous crimes against Americans, especially women and children. As of July 2024, there were over 650,000 illegal immigrants with criminal convictions or pending criminal charges on the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) non-detained docket, meaning many criminal aliens are free to roam our communities. On Thursday, I voted in favor of, and the House passed the Violence Against Women by Illegal Aliens Act to make illegal immigrants who admit to or are convicted of sex offenses or domestic violence inadmissible and deportable from the U.S. Please know I will continue to fight to secure our border and protect our communities.
This week, the House also passed the United States-Taiwan Expedited Double-Tax Relief Act. This bill would end double taxation for individuals and businesses operating in both the U.S. and Taiwan. Its passage represents a critical step toward strengthening the U.S.-Taiwan economic partnership and securing our strategic supply chain. By bolstering our partnership with Taiwan, we can also reduce our reliance on foreign adversaries like China. I remain committed to upholding our national security and securing a stronger future for our economy.
