Delivering Government Transparency

Across southern Michigan, there are grave concerns about government spending. The interest we pay on our debt will soon eclipse our national defense spending. It is not sustainable and we need significant reforms. Thanks to legislation I championed for many years, we now have a tool for Americans to better see how taxpayer dollars are being spent. The Office of Management and Budget recently launched the Federal Program Inventory (FPI). This tool is the implementation of my Taxpayer Right to Know Act, which became law in 2020. This online inventory allows the American people to search a database of all federal programs that provide grants, loans, or direct payments to individuals, governments, firms, or other organizations. The FPI is a critical tool in delivering transparency and finding wasteful and duplicative programs.

Hearing from You

Recently, I held community gatherings in Litchfield, Albion, Berrien Springs, and Vicksburg to hear directly from you about the issues facing our communities. We discussed my efforts to secure the border, outmaneuver the Chinese Communist Party, and rein in spending. Thank you to everyone who joined us.

Fighting the Illicit Drug Epidemic

For many years, I've been been working in Congress and in Michigan to combat the opioid epidemic. In recent years, traditional overdoses have begun shifting to poisonings of individuals who intended to ingest cocaine or other substances, unknowingly consuming something laced with fentanyl. I recently visited the Maurice Spears detention and treatment facility in Lenawee County with Mike Hirst, the founder of Andy’s Angels, to discuss strategies supporting prevention, recovery, and treatment. We must come together to support efforts to crack down on the flow of fentanyl and combat the illicit drug epidemic through legislation like the Support for Patients and Communities Reauthorization Act.

Supporting Nuclear Reforms

This week, the House passed H.R. 6544, the Atomic Energy Advancement Act. This bipartisan reform bolsters nuclear energy production by modernizing and enhancing current procedures within the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. Nuclear energy remains a critical piece of our energy production, providing clean, reliable, and affordable energy to families across the country, and in Michigan’s 5th Congressional District.

Upcoming Senior Fair

On Monday, March 4, I will be hosting a Senior Resource Fair at the Cass County Medical Care Facility from 12 PM-2 PM. The fair will include representatives of different organizations offering important resources to seniors and my casework team, who can help assist with any Social Security or Medicare issues.

For more information on the Senior Resource Fair, please contact our Niles district office at (269) 479-3115. I look forward to seeing you there!
