My Trip to the Border

Visiting the U.S.-Mexico Border

On Monday, I visited Eagle Pass, Texas to see firsthand the ongoing national security crisis at the U.S.-Mexico border. I had the opportunity to speak with border personnel and discuss solutions to the crisis that President Biden’s lax border policies has caused. In June alone, U.S. Border Patrol encountered 207, 416 illegal immigrants crossing the southern border, an all-time monthly high. Illegal border crossings keep shattering records and drug cartels are emboldened, smuggling illicit fentanyl and human trafficking victims across the border and into our communities. We must stand with our dedicated border patrol officers, finish building the wall, and secure the border now.

Biden's Recession is Here

The Bureau of Economic Analysis released second quarter gross domestic product (GDP) numbers this week, showing a 0.9% decline. This represents the second straight quarter of negative growth, marking the beginning of a recession. Inflation is rising while the economy is shrinking, imposing a financial burden on families and small businesses. The fact is American families have seen their hard-earned wage gains wiped out, costing the average family more than $8,600 over the next year.

Instead of abandoning inflation-fueling policies and offering new solutions, the Biden Administration is playing word games to deny economic reality. To curb this historic inflation that is hurting hardworking Americans, we need to unleash American energy, stop reckless spending by Democrats in Congress and the White House, and promote policies that create economic growth.

Standing Up for the Second Amendment

At every possible turn, Democrats are trying to chip away at the American people’s constitutional rights, and this week's vote on the so-called "Assault Weapons Ban" is yet another threat to our fundamental freedoms. I voted against it. This deeply flawed bill would ban some of the most common firearms owned by millions of law-abiding citizens while doing nothing to address the root cause of violence. I will continue to stand up against any partisan attempts to shred the Second Amendment, just as my constituents have always counted on me to do.

Protecting Victims of Domestic Violence

This week, the House passed bipartisan legislation which I co-authored, H.R. 7132, the Safe Connections Act, to help protect victims of domestic violence. The Safe Connections Act will ensure that survivors of domestic abuse are able to separate their mobile phone line from any shared plan involving an abuser, without facing penalties. I was pleased to see this legislation receive strong bipartisan support by the House, and we will keep pushing forward to get it signed into law.

Celebrating Local Small Businesses

I enjoyed having the opportunity to stop by Ken’s M60 Grill, a family restaurant in Concord. I would like to extend my heartfelt congratulations to Ken and his team as they celebrate 70 years of delicious food and friendly service. Despite the adversity and challenges faced during the pandemic, I commend Ken for remaining resolute and keeping the restaurant open.

Promoting America's Energy Security

Every step of the way, the Biden Administration has undermined our nation’s energy security, repeatedly putting America last. Now there are efforts underway to impose a ban on oil exports, which would jeopardize American jobs and lead to higher energy prices for hardworking families both in Michigan and across the country. This week, I joined my colleagues in urging President Biden to abandon this misguided proposal that would be detrimental to our national security and economy.
