Joining Secretary Chavez-DeRemer and Speaker Johnson

On Tuesday, I joined Department of Labor Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer and Republican Leadership at a press conference to discuss the devastating impacts of the Democrats' shutdown. This government shutdown is now the longest shutdown in our nation's history—and the longer it lasts, the worse things get for the American people. Every week, workers, job creators, and communities lose out on chances to thrive as families struggle to put food on the table. This shutdown is also showing Americans just how far the Democrats will go to promote their out-of-touch agenda—even if it means holding the American people hostage for more than a month. America’s workers, families, unions, and job creators have all spoken: Pass the clean CR and re-open the government immediately.

Visiting Local Businesses

I recently was able to visit Martin’s Super Market to hear about the issues that are top of mind for them. During the course of the government shutdown, they have heard concerns from some of their customers who utilize SNAP benefits to get by. Unfortunately, due to the lapse in appropriations, SNAP benefits are at risk for 42 million individuals. While on September 19, I voted for a clean government funding bill, Democrats have now voted 15 times against this nonpartisan continuing resolution. Senate Democrats must reopen the government to provide certainty for Michigan families.

Supporting Rural Health

On Friday, I stopped by the Cass Family Clinic's new location in Dowagiac to discuss my recent efforts to support rural healthcare. The Working Families Tax Cuts included a $50 billion Rural Health Transformation grant, the single largest investment in rural healthcare in history. This grant will provide Michigan with the tools necessary to make our healthcare system work more efficiently and ensure the long-term sustainability of our rural providers for years to come. Unfortunately, the Democrats’ proposal to end the government shutdown would repeal this historic investment that Michigan has already submitted an application for.

Empowering Our First Responders

I had the opportunity to stop by the Addison Fire Training Facility to hear from current Fire Chief Dave Aungst and retired Fire Chief Tim Shaw about the work they are doing to ensure that our brave firefighters have the training necessary and remain prepared to protect our community. I also got to see the Kid Fire Safety House that the department uses to teach fire safety education and the precautions children can take. Thank you to the Addison Fire Department for letting me visit and for the vital work you do to keep us all safe!

Casework Spotlight

Residents of the 5th Congressional District of Michigan can contact my office for assistance in dealing with federal agencies. While we cannot promise a favorable outcome, my office can help you receive the information you need and also try to resolve various issues with federal agencies if you feel you have been treated unfairly.

Roger from Springport contacted my office for assistance resolving an issue with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Here is what he had to say about his experience:

"Outstanding response times, thorough and no unnecessary items asked for. Thank you so much." - Roger from Springport
