Hearing from Agriculture Leaders

This week, I met with members of the Michigan Agri-Business Association from Lenawee and Eaton counties. We discussed the many issues impacting agri-business including supply chain issues, soaring input costs from diesel and fertilizer, and labor shortages. I also partnered with many of my colleagues this week to send a letter to the Biden administration on reducing barriers to agriculture production such as changes to “Waters of the United States” (WOTUS), addressing farm input costs, and the onerous green climate agenda. Easing Regulatory Burdens

The Biden administration has proposed a harmful rule that would have a devastating impact on Michigan Works! and its ability to support workers and job seekers. In an Education & Labor hearing on Tuesday, I urged Secretary Walsh to reconsider this misguided attempt to decimate employment services in Michigan. Our state has a track record of success, outpacing much of the rest of the country for performance while maintaining one of the lowest costs per participant in the country. This is another example of rigid, one-size-fits-all government regulation not working.

Border Crisis Worsens

May was another staggering and record-setting month at the southern border. There were 239,416 illegal crossings, marking the single worst month in DHS history. President Biden’s failure to secure the border, much less visit it, is unacceptable. Fentanyl is pouring across the border, human trafficking is occurring, and even people on the terror watch list have taken advantage of the open border. Border security impacts us all and we must close the border.

Promoting Online Privacy for Children

On Tuesday, I participated in an important Energy and Commerce subcommittee hearing on privacy. Earlier this Congress, I reintroduced the bipartisan PROTECT Kids Act with Rep. Bobby Rush (D-IL), which would update and modify Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA), the current law on child online privacy. In this digital age, we must make sure our children are properly protected and that the law is updated to adapt to the evolution of technology that has occurred since COPPA’s passage in 1998.

Condemning Violence Against Pregnancy Centers

Since a draft Supreme Court decision on Dobbs was leaked, more than 40 pro-life organizations and crisis pregnancy centers across the country have been attacked or vandalized. Sadly, President Biden and Speaker Pelosi have refused to condemn this unacceptable violence and criminal activity. This week, I was joined by over 120 of my colleagues, demanding Attorney General Merrick Garland investigate, and put a stop to, this recent spree of attacks being perpetrated by radical pro-abortion groups.

Congressional Art Winner

Recently, I announced the winners of the 2022 Congressional Art Competition for Michigan's 7th District. Katelyn Richards, a graduating senior at Lumen Christi Catholic School in Jackson County, received first place for her entry, Changing Seasons. It is a watercolor painting that depicts each of Michigan’s four seasons to show the changes and contrast of colors and settings our state experiences throughout the year. Katelyn’s art teacher at Lumen Christi is Alicia Miller, and her winning artwork will be displayed in the Cannon Tunnel to the U.S. Capitol Building.

Second place was awarded to Cadance Sharpe, a graduating senior at Jefferson High School in Monroe County. Her entry, Honey Dipper, is a drawing of a honey jar and dipper made with colored pencils. Cadance’s art teacher at Jefferson is Sarah Carter, and her runner-up artwork will be displayed in my Jackson office.
