Happy Independence Day!

Happy Independence Day!

248 years ago, our forefathers declared independence and founded a nation on the principles of liberty and freedom. Wishing you and your families a very happy Independence Day!

Honoring a Local Hero

As we celebrate Independence Day, we must also remember those who have fought to defend our freedoms and communities. Tragically, we lost Hillsdale County Sheriff Deputy William “Bill” Butler Jr., who was senselessly killed last week. Deputy Butler was a dedicated military veteran who served his country in the United States Army National Guard for over 20 years, followed by 12 years of service with the Hillsdale County Sheriff’s Office. He will be remembered for his brave service and devotion to his country and community.

Lowering Health Care Costs

In 2019, the Trump administration published a final rule to expand Association Health Plans (AHPs). These new AHPs produced savings of up to 29 percent on average while the rule was in effect. In March 2019, the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia sided with a coalition of Democratic attorneys general and ruled that the AHP rule went beyond the department’s authority. In April 2019, the Trump administration appealed the ruling. Eight days after Biden took office, and despite oral arguments being held,  the Biden administration asked the appellate court to hold the appeal in abeyance. This past April, the Biden administration officially rescinded the Trump AHP rule. In response, I have introduced legislation that would block this rescission, leveling the playing field for small businesses who are allowed to band together to get similar bulk rates that large corporations enjoy. Last June, the House passed my legislation to codify the Trump-era rule. Please know I will continue to push back against the misguided policies of the Biden administration that hurt our small businesses.

Supporting our Manufacturers

Recently, I had the opportunity to visit Madsen Steel Wire Products in Bronson, to discuss the importance of a competitive tax code, as well as the essential role manufacturing plays in economic growth and stability. It is imperative that Congress takes action before the expiration of pro-manufacturing tax policies in 2025. We must defend our manufacturing sector.
